Investing in a few key tools, such as a rotary cutter, a self-healing cutting mat and quilter’s rules, for example, can really speed things up.

Useful sewing machine feet

Walking foot: When sewing several layers of fabric, a walking foot makes sure that the top and bottom layers of fabric are pulled along at the same speed for a smooth stitching line, and prevents puckering.

Quarter-inch foot: This measures exactly 5mm (¼in) from the point of the needle to the inner edge of the foot, to allow you to sew a seam allowance quickly and accurately. It may have a guide on it to prevent the fabric from going past the edge. It is sometimes known as a ‘little foot’.

Appliqué foot: A clear, hinged foot that allows the sewing underneath to remain clearly visible; it is easy to manoeuvre when sewing appliquéd pieces.

Ditch quilting foot: A foot with an extended guide that helps you to remain in the seam while the machine stitches.
